CORA MELCHER

Cora Melcher is a Portland (Maine) based artist working primarily in oil paint, print and film. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 2020 with a BA in both Studio Art and Psychology.

Melcher combines Jungian psychological concepts of the ego, archetypes and the unconscious with observations of our physical selves. She urges viewers to appreciate how we (as people with boundaried bodies), experience the boundarylessness of emotions, energy and thought. Her intention is to acknowledge the interconnectedness of these various experiences.

By portraying figures alongside more surreal, abstracted gestures, she integrates varying levels of illusion. Collaged space and layered patterns mix linear perspective with flatness. With this, her work comments on mid 20th century painting while steering somewhere in between the worlds of expressionism and contemporary narrative painting.
